If you take every opportunity to increase your speed and endurance, you should consider ceramic bearings. Ceramics decrease rolling friction, increase speed and have a longer service life relative to steel ball bearings. Our ceramic upgrade introduces ceramic in place of steel for each of the four load carrying bearings in our wheelset. (non load-carrying bearings in the freehub mechanism remain steel).
Not all ceramics are created equal. Since their introduction to cycling, ceramic bearings have appeared from many makers. Unfortunately, the chemical composition of the balls, silicon nitride (Si3N4), is not, by itself, a guarantee of quality. Nor is the ABEC number that specifies roundness. Ceramic bearings have reached the market that easily fracture and chip, that run with higher friction, and last only a short time. We address this problem by working with the pioneer of ceramic bearings in cycling, Ceramicspeed. Ceramicspeed sources balls of the highest quality (Grade 3), matches them (within microns) to special races, equips them with super low friction retainers and seals, and lubes them with lowest viscosity grease. The result is performance and longevity that will outlast the best steel bearings by 2 to 5 times, making ceramic an economical long term choice.
